When to start

A lot of parents ask me what the right age is to start their kids shooting. There is no magic age....it's a matter of maturity and strength. The young lady pictured below is level headed, mature, safe, and quite a fine shot - even though she's barely taller than her shotgun.

Take your kids to the range....they'll love it!

Comments:
Your child needs to meet two criteria before they start shooting: whether they are physically big enough to handle the gun, and whether they are mature enough to be safe and responsible.

I've seen ten-year old boys and girls who compete safely and responsibly with handguns in Practical Pistol matches.

I've also seen 40-year olds who scare me to death.

Fortunately, these latter people don't last very long. Unsafe gun-handling habits are not tolerated in IPSC competition.

I'd rather have a happy, safe pre-teen than a grumpy, dangerous old man shoot with me any day. The juniors are more likely to listen to cautionary advice, although sometimes their parents aren't the best choice of a coach or trainer.
